BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Police are investigating the weekend killing of a man in downtown Birmingham.

Birmingham police Lt. Sean Edwards said officers responded to a report of a person shot on 17th Street North around 5 a.m. Sunday.

Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/1pI00VE) that the man died after he was shot twice during a robbery attempt in a parking lot across the street from a nightclub.

Police say the man, who had been shot twice in the leg, was found inside his car. He was taken to UAB Hospital, where he died.

The man's name was not immediately released.

Edwards said preliminary information shows the man was shot during a robbery attempt as he and his girlfriend got into the car after leaving the club.
