Cleaning up hazardous materials from USS Yorktown now expected to cost less than projected

MOUNT PLEASANT, South Carolina — It will cost less than projected to clean hazardous chemicals and liquids from the aging aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in Charleston Harbor.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/15bzf10 ) the cost of cleaning 160,000 gallons of petroleum residue and about 1.5 million gallons of contaminated water in compartments below decks will cost about $4.5 million.

Earlier projections had put the cost at about $6 million.

The board of the Patriot's Point Naval and Maritime Museum was told Wednesday that there are no leaks in the hull so the material does not pose a threat to the harbor.

Cleaning the material is the first step in work to restore the 70-year-old vessel. The estimate for that is about $80 million.
