Medical examiner, police: Depressed Vancouver man killed wife, wounded son, killed himself

VANCOUVER, Washington — Authorities in Vancouver, Washington, say a depressed 49-year-old man fatally shot his wife and wounded his son before killing himself at the family home.

Police say Danny Luster also killed the family dog early Monday.

The Columbian reports ( ) that the Clark County medical examiner's office says Luster shot his wife, Sandra Luster, in the head.

Police say in court papers that the man shot his 23-year-old son, Matthew, in the abdomen at close range when the younger man tried to stop his father's rampage. Matthew Luster was hospitalized in critical condition Thursday.

Neighbors heard gunfire and screams.

A search warrant affidavit said Danny Luster had recently been showing signs of depression and his family was in the process of getting him an appointment with a mental health professional.
