Police: Elderly couple killed when their car rear-ends garbage truck in Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Connecticut — State police say an elderly couple from Willington have died after their car struck the rear of a garbage truck in Mansfield.

The accident occurred at about 10:30 Monday morning on Storrs Road outside the Eastbrook Mall.

Police said 78-year-old Thomas Ryan was driving the Volvo S60 car and 79-year-old Arlene Ryan was a passenger.

Police said the Willimantic Waste Paper Co. Inc. truck was headed southbound and slowing to make a right turn when the car hit it.

The truck driver, 48-year-old Jerrilynn Robbins of Ashford, was not injured.

Police said they are still investigating the crash.
