ONTARIO, California — Authorities say an apparently suicidal man with a large knife forced the full closure of a freeway for nearly four hours in the eastern suburbs of Los Angeles.

California Department of Transportation spokeswoman Terry Kasinga tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/ZrFpYS) that both sides of State Route 60 in Ontario were shut down shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Kasinga says a man with a 6- to 8-inch knife was moving from freeway lanes to an underpass and was "very distraught."

She says police and California Highway Patrol officers were unable to get near the man for hours and the freeway was backed up for about 5 miles in both directions.

He was finally taken into custody about 10:15 p.m. Lanes opened shortly before 11 p.m.
