SLIDELL, Louisiana — Louisiana State Police say a 47-year-old Mississippi man was killed when his pickup struck the rear of an 18-wheeler on Interstate 59.
The accident happened north of Slidell around 9 p.m. Sunday.
Trooper Greg Marchand says an 18-wheeler rolled over a mattress on the highway. Marchand said the mattress struck the undercarriage of the truck and tore the airlines, fuel lines and electrical lines from under the vehicle.
As the truck and trailer remained stalled in the right northbound lane, Marchand said a pickup driven by Thomas Neumann of Carriere, Mississippi, struck the trailer. He says the pickup became engulfed in flames with Neumann still inside. Neumann was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office.
The accident remains under investigation.
