PATERSON, New Jersey — Attempted murder charges have been filed against a man who allegedly engaged in a shootout with a police officer in northern New Jersey.

Passaic County prosecutors tell The Record (http://bit.ly/1rlCWGj) that Getzmir Robinson, of Paterson, also faces weapons charges. They say he was armed with two handguns when the shooting occurred around 1 a.m. on Union Avenue in Paterson.

Authorities say the officer was responding to reports of shots fired when he encountered Robinson, who allegedly began shooting at the officer, who then returned fire.

Prosecutors would not say if anyone was wounded in the shootout or provide further details on the incident, citing the ongoing investigation.

It wasn't known Sunday if Robinson had retained a lawyer, and a telephone number for him could not be located.
