PHOENIX — Authorities say a suspect shot and injured a Phoenix police officer and then fatally wounded himself as police closed in.

Police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump says officers with the gang patrol stopped 31-year-old Salvador Acevedo on Thursday night while he was riding his bike in west Phoenix.

Crump says that when the officers stepped out of their car, Acevedo opened fire and wounded 39-year-old Det. Brian Cuthbertson in the leg.

Crump says police tracked Acevedo down and saw him shoot himself. He later died at a hospital.

Cuthbertson, a 10-year veteran of the department, was said to be in good spirits Friday and is expected to recover.

Records show Acevedo was released from an Arizona prison in May 2013 after serving time for drive-by shooting and aggravated assault.
