Jeanerette police officer dies after crashing his patrol car during high-speed chase

JEANERETTE, Louisiana — State police say a Jeanerette police officer died after crashing his patrol car during a high-speed chase in Iberia Parish.

The accident happened just after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on St. Peter Rd. near the Iberia/St. Mary parish line.

Troopers identified officer as 22-year old Juandre Gilliam. He had been on the police force for two years. Troopers say Gilliam died at a New Iberia hospital.

Two suspects in the car Gilliam was chasing are being questioned by police.

KATC TV reports (http://bit.ly/1akLvjv ) charges are pending.

Police say Gilliam notified this dispatcher he was making a traffic stop just before the chase began.

State police are investigating the crash as standard procedure because it involves an officer.
