Federal agencies hold public meeting on proposal to nourish beach in Buxton on Hatteras Island

MANTEO, North Carolina — Federal agencies are holding a public meeting about a beach nourishment proposal for Buxton on Hatteras Island.

The meeting will be held Thursday in the Fessenden Center in Buxton. Residents will be able to discuss the environmental assessment of the plan.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released the environmental assessment for public review. The public comment period continues through Oct. 19.

Dare County is seeking a permit from the corps for the dredge-and-fill work needed for the beach nourishment and from the National Park Service for the fill work that would take place on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The county wants to pump sand on the beach in front of motels and other private property in Buxton to protect N.C. Highway 12.
