LAKE PLACID, New York — The Empire State Winter Games are officially open in Lake Placid.

The 35th edition of New York's winter sports competition got underway Thursday night at the Lake Placid Olympic Center with a rousing Opening Ceremony as athletes from 19 sports and four adaptive disciplines marched into the site of the 1980 Miracle on Ice.

Skeleton racer Brandon Ruocco of nearby Jay lit the Games cauldron.

Keynote speaker Karen Courtland-Kelly, a 1994 Olympian in figure skating, addressed the athletes with a theme of inspiration, while figure skater Carly Jones and ski jumping coach Evan Bliss delivered the Athletes Oath and Officials Oath, respectively.

A record number of over 1,600 athletes are set to compete starting Friday in the Adirondack Mountain region.

Competition runs through Sunday.
