Autopsy confirms that man who died in confrontation with Phoenix officer was fatally shot

PHOENIX — An autopsy has confirmed that an unarmed drug suspect who died in a confrontation with a Phoenix police office was fatally shot.

Maricopa County spokeswoman Cari Gerchick on Monday said the autopsy conducted over the weekend by the Medical Examiner's Office determined that 34-year-old Rumain Brisbon died from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.

Brisbon died Dec. 2 during a scuffle at an apartment complex, and police previously said the officer fatally shot Brisbon.

Gerchick says the autopsy also classified Brisbon's death as a homicide. That merely indicates that Brisbon was killed by another person, not whether it was a crime.

Gerchick says a full autopsy report won't be available for some time.

Police are conducting an internal investigation, and prosecutors will determine whether the officer will face criminal charges.
