Rhode Island lawyer gets 30 months home confinement for embezzling from elderly client

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — A lawyer who pleaded no contest to embezzling nearly $130,000 from an elderly client has been sentenced to 2 ½ years of home confinement.

The Providence Journal ( ) reports that Janet Mastronardi was sentenced Wednesday by Superior Court Judge Walter Stone.

The 54-year-old East Greenwich resident had also pleaded no contest to elderly exploitation.

The attorney general's office had sought jail time.

Mastronardi was the appointed guardian of Jane Jacques, who had had at least two strokes and dementia.

Jacques died in April at a nursing home.

The attorney general's office says Mastronardi paid back the money.
