WARRENTON, Virginia — Virginia State Police say a Fauquier County deputy shot and wounded a man who fled when the officer tried to stop his vehicle.

According to state police, the deputy saw the man involved in unspecified "criminal activity" Friday afternoon in Warrenton. After the man refused to stop his vehicle, the deputy gave chase. The suspect lost control of his vehicle, struck a tree and fled on foot.

A sheriff's K-9 team found the suspect hiding behind a house, where he was shot by the deputy. The man was taken to INOVA Fairfax Hospital for treatment.

Sheriff Charlie Ray Fox Jr. asked the state police to investigate. State police declined to say what prompted the shooting or whether the suspect was armed, citing the ongoing investigation.
