Rutgers gets $12.5M intended to help integrate medical schools

NEW BRUNSWICK, New Jersey — Rutgers University says it has received a donation to help pay for it to integrate two medical schools into the university.

New Jersey's flagship public university announced the $12.5 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on Thursday.

It's intended to help pay for the $75 million cost over three years that the school expects to pay to absorb parts of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The merger goes into effect July 1.

While the state government approved the restructuring of New Jersey's higher education system, the state has not provided additional aid to pay for the transition.

University President Robert Barchi has said that it's the biggest university merger ever in the United States.
