Officers responding to fire in Brooklyn find 1 man fatally shot, another man wounded

NEW YORK — Police say officers responding to a 911 call of a fire in a Brooklyn building discovered a 24-year-old man shot to death and another man with gunshot wounds to his shoulder and torso.

It happened at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Stuyvesant Gardens Houses on Gates Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Police say Qasim Mitchell was found in his apartment with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say an unidentified 38-year-old man was found in the rear courtyard and hospitalized in stable condition.

The fire was quickly brought under control.

No other information was immediately available.
