Coroner: Inmate found dead in Gunnison County jail cell likely overdosed on drugs


MONTROSE, Colorado — Authorities say an inmate who was found dead in his cell at the Gunnison County Detention Center likely overdosed on drugs.

The Montrose Daily Press reports ( ) 25-year-old Joseph Duke was found unresponsive Sunday morning. Investigators say he had a pre-existing medical condition, but Sheriff Rick Besecker could not provide additional details because the investigation is not complete.

Gunnison County Coroner Frank Vader says Duke likely died of a drug overdose, but toxicology tests are pending. The death is believed to be accidental.
