Officials say burglary suspect found hanged in cell at Sumter-Lee county jail

SUMTER, South Carolina — An inmate at the jail for Sumter and Lee counties has died after being found hanged in his cell.

The Item of Sumter reports (http://bit.ly/17Bhw0i) that 20-year-old Giovanni Maldanado was found hanging from a bedsheet around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Authorities tried but failed to revive him. Deputies said the security officer who found Maldanado said he had last checked on the inmate about three hours earlier.

Officials say Maldanado was being held in a single-inmate cell.

Sheriff's deputies are investigating.

Maldanado had been in jail since July on charges of second- and third-degree burglary.
