CONWAY, South Carolina — A man on death row for killing two people on the South Carolina coast 10 years ago is seeking a new trial.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported (http://bit.ly/1NcDsok) that 47-year-old Stephen Stanko is seeking a new trial for the 2005 killing of 74-year-old Henry Turner of Conway.

Stanko also was sentenced to die for killing his 43-year-old live-in girlfriend, Laura Ling, in Georgetown County during the same crime spree.

Stanko has new lawyers who contend that his initial lawyers did a poor job of representing him.

It took an Horry County jury about an hour in 2009 to recommend a death sentence for Stanko. The South Carolina Supreme Court upheld that conviction and sentence in 2013.

This week's hearing in Conway starts a new round of appeals.
