SALEM, Oregon — Prison officials say a 54-year-old inmate serving a life sentence died unexpectedly in the facility's infirmary in Salem.

Oregon State Penitentiary officials said Wednesday in a news release that Ronald Ruffin died just after 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Ruffin entered Department of Corrections custody on March 21, 1988, on one count of murder in Multnomah County. No other details were immediately available.

Oregon State Police and the Marion County Medical Examiner are investigating.
