SAN RAMON, California — A house fire has killed one man in suburban San Francisco.

Fire department spokeswoman Kim French in the city of San Ramon says a neighbor alerted authorities about the house fire at 7:45 a.m. Saturday.

Fire crews found the house in flames, and recovered the only occupant of the house from a bedroom. Authorities at a local hospital pronounced him dead after his arrival there. French says the victim was elderly but did not otherwise identify him.

Fire officials say the home had no working smoke detectors. The fire appeared to have started in the bedroom but the cause still is being investigated.
