Christian Gaines named executive director of ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — Business development specialist Christian Gaines has been named executive director of ArtPrize, the annual international art competition held in Grand Rapids.

Gaines has experience in staff management, fundraising and programming for major film festivals.

ArtPrize made the announcement of his hiring on Monday, the first day of artist registration for this year's competition.

As executive director, Gaines will oversee all aspects of ArtPrize, including finance, operations, marketing and administration.

Gaines replaces Daryn Kuipers, who served as interim executive director.

Meanwhile, MLive.com reports that Grand Rapids-based Founders Brewing Co. has become an ArtPrize premier sponsor, a deal worth more than $500,000 over the next five years.

ArtPrize 2013 runs from Sept. 18 through Oct. 6. It's open to any artist and is decided by a public vote.
