Teen sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting death in Conway

CONWAY, South Carolina — A Conway teen has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of a man earlier this year.

Sixteen-year-old Hasien Markeese Ransom pleaded guilty Wednesday and has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Thirty-six--year-old Sylvester Lorenzo Bell Jr. was shot Jan. 7 while standing outside his home waiting for his children's school bus. Bell died the next day.

Circuit Judge Steven John said he considered the effect of Bell's death on his family, as well as Ransom's age and his home life.

Ransom will be held at the Department of Juvenile Justice until he is 17 and will be transferred to the Department of Corrections to complete the sentence.

Ransom had been charged with murder.

Murder charges are pending against 19-year-old Rashad Derller Burroughs of Conway.
