Trial of former Leicester middle school teacher charged with raping student scheduled to start

WORCESTER, Massachusetts — The trial of a former Leicester (LESS-tuhr) Middle School music teacher charged with raping a 12-year-old female student is getting under way.

Opening statements in the trial of 44-year-old David Gilman of Brookfield are scheduled for Tuesday in Worcester Superior Court.

The Telegram & Gazette (http://bit.ly/10hBGHM ) reports that Gilman has been charged with child rape aggravated by age difference and indecent assault and battery on a child. Authorities say the assaults occurred between Oct. 30, 2009, and Dec. 14, 2009, at the middle school.

Gilman taught band, chorus and drama to grades six through eight and had worked as a teacher for 15 years.

He has pleaded not guilty and his lawyer says the facts will come out in court.
