Jury of 9 men, 3 women selected for murder trial of federal agent charged in Waikiki shooting

HONOLULU — A jury has been selected for the murder trial of a federal agent charged with shooting a man inside a Waikiki McDonald's restaurant.

The Honolulu prosecutor's office says nine men and three women were selected as jurors Tuesday. The alternates are two men and two women.

They will return to court for opening statements on July 1.

State Department Special Agent Christopher Deedy is charged with second-degree murder in the November 2011 death of Kollin Elderts, of Kailua. Deedy, of Arlington, Virginia, was in Honolulu for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

Attorneys began the jury selection process on April 15, questioning potential panelists individually because the case has generated considerable media attention.

Deedy's attorneys continue to push for the case to be moved from state court to federal court.
