Barcelona extends Adriano's contract through to 2017, adds buyout clause at $116 million

BARCELONA, Spain — Barcelona has renewed defender Adriano's contract through to 2017 and added a buyout clause at 90 million euros ($116 million).

The club says the deal was sealed Thursday at a meeting with the player's agent, Paulo Affonso Neves.

The Brazil defender arrived from Sevilla in 2010, and Barcelona says he has "shown versatility" by defending effectively on both flanks.

Barcelona says Adriano also "performed well in the center back position" as well as occasionally in an attacking midfielder role. He has scored 10 goals in 105 appearances, including a spectacular right-footed curling shot in a 1-0 victory against Valencia last September.

The player was sidelined for more than a month after injuring his hamstring in March.
