2 men injured, 1 charged in Smithfield apartment complex shootings

SMITHFIELD, North Carolina — Police have accused a man in a shooting at a Smithfield apartment complex that sent two people to the hospital.

Multiple news sources report 23-year-old Johnell Andrew Padgett was arrested late Sunday morning. Officials say he shot two men in their 20s, one in the leg and the other in the torso.

Police say the injuries were not life-threatening and both men are in stable condition.

Padgett is being held at the Johnston County jail and is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

It is unclear if Padgett has a lawyer.
