Virginia's unemployment falls to 5.3 percent in October; still below national average

RICHMOND, Virginia — The Virginia Employment Commission says the state's jobless rate fell to 5.3 percent in October, marking the first decline in the last five months.

The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate down from 5.5 percent in September and down from 5.4 percent a year ago.

Jobs decreases were seen in industries including professional and business services, manufacturing, information, leisure and hospitality, government and mining.

Increases were seen in education and health services, construction, trade, transportation and utilities and miscellaneous services.

The Labor Department says unemployment rates fell in 34 U.S. states in October, rose in five states and were unchanged in 11.

The national unemployment rate fell to a six-year low of 5.8 percent.
