Charlotte police officer kills 20-year-old woman with knife, his 2nd fatal shooting in 3 years

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer who shot and killed a woman armed with a knife also killed an armed robbery suspect who pulled a gun on an officer less than three years ago, authorities said.

Police interviewed Anthony Holzhauer and his partner with a prosecutor present not long after Tuesday night's shooting, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe, who added he didn't see anything in the investigation that warranted immediate charges against the officer.

"The case will be turned over eventually to the district attorney's office for his complete review," Monroe said at a news conference Thursday.

Holzhauer, a five-year veteran of the force, and a second officer were called to an apartment in northeast Charlotte around 9 p.m. Wednesday. A woman outside the home said she and her partner had been arguing all day and she was still inside armed with a knife, the chief said.

The officers saw 20-year-old Janisha Fonville on the couch. The officers shouted for her to drop the knife and she refused, getting off the couch and lunging at the officers, investigators said.

Holzhauer shot twice, hitting Fonville in the hand and shoulder. She died a short time later, the chief said.

In July 2012, Holzhauer shot and killed Michael Laney. Laney was a suspect in an armed robbery, and authorities said he pulled a gun on an officer during a struggle over his arrest. Prosecutors cleared Holzhauer, although Laney's family complained he overacted.

Monroe said Holzhauer also fired his gun at suspects during a 2013 shootout, but no one was injured.
