Police: Man who threatened girlfriend shot dead by officers outside Houston mall

HOUSTON — Houston police say officers shot and killed an armed man outside a Houston shopping mall after the man had threatened his girlfriend.

The incident happened about 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Smith says that when two officers approached him near the bus stop outside a northwest Houston mall, he drew a handgun from his waistband and refused officers demands that he drop it.

Police spokesman Kese Smith says the 26-year-old suspect had become depressed after losing his job at a restaurant. Smith says the man had threatened his girlfriend at a bus stop, and her mother contacted police to express her worry over the situation.

Smith says that when two officers approached him near the bus stop outside a northwest Houston mall, he drew a handgun from his waistband and refused to drop it. Both opened fire, fatally wounding the man.

Smith said the gunman did not fire on the officers. Neither officer nor the woman was injured. The gunman's name hasn't been released.
