21-year-old South Dakota man sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexual abuse charge

PIERRE, South Dakota — A 21-year-old South Dakota man accused of sexually abusing a 5-year-old child has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

U.S. District Judge Roberto Lange has also ordered Christian Whiteman to five years of supervised release. The Dupree man earlier pleaded guilty to abusive sexual contact by force.

Authorities say Whiteman sexually abused the child at one point between October 2012 and May 2013. Authorities say the victim attempted to push Whiteman away during the incident, but the child was unsuccessful because of Whiteman's weight.

Whiteman is now under the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
