Ohio man charged with DUI after car catches on fire on Delaware


SMYRNA, Delaware — Delaware State Police have charged an Ohio man with DUI after his car caught fire in Smyrna.

It happened about 6 p.m. Wednesday on State Route One near Exit 114. Troopers say a moving car caught fire and stopped in the median.

Police say a trooper saw the car continue to move and saw the driver, who was unresponsive with his foot on the accelerator.

Investigators say the trooper got a shovel from the patrol car and smashed the windshield on the passenger's side to get the driver out. Police the driver woke up and tried to drive away.

Troopers say the driver eventually got out of the car and was arrested.

Twenty-one-year-old Christopher Nagel of Grafton, Ohio, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and other offenses.
