BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — The state labor department says first-time claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana for the week ending Feb. 21 decreased to 2,144 from the previous week's total of 2,522.

For the comparable week a year earlier, there were 1,964 initial claims, officials said Friday.

Officials say a shorter work-week due to the Mardi Gras holiday contributed to the decrease.

The four-week moving average, a less volatile measure, decreased to 2,570, from the previous week's average of 2,667.

Continued unemployment claims for the week ending Feb. 21 decreased to 20,939 compared to 21,435 the previous week.

The four-week moving average for such claims decreased to 21,364 from the previous week's average of 21,547.
