Boy, 15, arrested in shooting that injured man at July 4 barbecue in Brooklyn park

NEW YORK — Police say a 15-year-old boy bicycled up to a Fourth of July barbecue in a New York City park and fired at the gathering, shooting a 63-year-old man.

The New York Police Department said Sunday the man was hospitalized in stable condition. The teenager, Tyrone Whidbee, has been arrested on attempted murder charges.

It's unclear whether he has a lawyer who can comment on the charges. No phone number for Whidbee was immediately found.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Brooklyn's Clinton Hill area.

Police say Whidbee fled when Officer Alfonso LaRue approached him. With LaRue chasing on foot, his partner followed in their car and blocked the teen's path.

Police say they saw him throw a gun down and an eyewitness identified him as the gunman.
