Heavy rain fall continues over SE Louisiana, Mississippi coast, flood watch may be extended

NEW ORLEANS — The weather forecast for south Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast calls for more of the same: Rain.

Strong storms moved northeast Tuesday through parts of southeast Louisiana and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and that pattern was expected to continue throughout the day, according to the National Weather Service.

And flash flood warnings were issued for several Louisiana parishes Tuesday morning as the storms moved in from the Gulf of Mexico.

The storms could bring an additional 2-3 inches of rain Tuesday, said Alek Krautmann, weather service forecaster in Slidell, Louisiana.

"Higher amounts of rain could fall in heavier downpours," Krautmann said.

The main threat is torrential rainfall, which could cause street flooding, frequent lightning, gusty winds and hail, he said.

A flash flood watch, issued over the weekend, was extended until 6 p.m. Tuesday. The latest advisory from the weather service said the watch could be extended, with the forecast calling for more rain thought the end of the week.

A weather observer in Slidell reported 4.7 inches of rain, Krautmann said. At the weather office, nearly 3 inches had fallen since 7 a.m. Tuesday

The heavy rain caused officials to close the 24-mile Lake Pontchartrain Causeway bridge.

Some street flooding was reported in the Slidell and Mandeville area of St. Tammany Parish and in Houma, Krautmann said.
