Authorities upgrade charge against Tipton County woman to 1st-degree murder in husband's death

BRIGHTON, Tennessee — Authorities say a Tipton County woman has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge in the shooting death of her husband.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says 43-year-old Angela Denise Brewer had originally been charged with second-degree murder in the death of William Stanford Brewer Jr.

Authorities said the man's body was discovered in the bedroom of the family home in Brighton on Dec. 8, 2013.

Investigators say Angela Brewer told police she work up early that morning and loaded a shotgun with the belief that an intruder was outside.

Authorities said she returned to the bedroom after checking the house's back door and front bedroom. Investigators said she told police she put the shotgun on the bed and tried to wake her husband, but the weapon discharged, killing him.
