Sentencing postponed for Fredericksburg businessman who hasn't paid taxes since 1988

RICHMOND, Virginia — A judge has postponed the sentencing of a Fredericksburg businessman who admitted he hasn't paid personal income taxes for 25 years.

Jimmy Holland Boyd was president of Spring City Co. Excavating Inc. He pleaded guilty in January to failing to pay employment taxes and file personal returns. Boyd owes the U.S. $350,000 in back taxes.

Friday's scheduled sentencing in federal court in Richmond was delayed until Wednesday to allow further review of Boyd's medical records. Boyd is asking for probation because he's had serious health problems, including colon cancer and heart attacks.

Prosecutors say Boyd's ailments can be treated in prison. They also cite the seriousness of Boyd's crimes, calling him one of Virginia's "most notorious tax scofflaws." They're asking for a sentence of up to two years.
