SCRANTON, Pennsylvania — A northeastern Pennsylvania prosecutor plans to seek the death penalty against a man charged in the fatal beating of his girlfriend's son.

Twenty-four-year-old Eddie Widdick of Jermyn is charged with first-degree murder and other offenses in the March death of 10-month-old Silas Sorak.

The (Scranton) Times-Tribune (http://bit.ly/1oavYcq ) reports that Lackawanna County District Attorney Andrew Jarbola will seek the death penalty against Widdick. Jarbola said Wednesday the fact the victim was under 12 makes it a capital case.

Widdick allegedly called his girlfriend, Ashley Nelson, to say the child wasn't breathing right. Authorities say Widdick later admitted he dropped the infant down a flight of steps and forcefully put him into a crib.

Nelson hasn't been charged.
