GREENVILLE, Mississippi — An investiture ceremony will be held for U.S. District Judge Debra M. Brown on June 20 in Greenville.

The ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Washington County Convention Center.

Brown is the first African American woman to serve as a federal judge in Mississippi.

She presides over cases in the Northern District of Mississippi in Greenville.

The Northern District encompasses the northernmost 37 counties in the state. Courthouses are located in Aberdeen, Oxford, and Greenville. There are three active and two senior U.S. District Judges who preside over a wide range of civil and criminal matters.

Brown was appointed to the federal bench by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in the fall of 2013.
