Judge sets May 23 sentencing hearing for ex-congressman's niece in plot to loot charities

NEW ORLEANS — A federal judge has scheduled a May 23 sentencing hearing for a gravely ill New Orleans woman who pleaded guilty in a corruption case involving government grant money.

In an order Thursday, Lemelle said he decided to sentence Coleman in open court because she is able to leave home for medical appointments and procedures.

U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle was weighing whether to sentence Angela Coleman, a niece of former U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, at home or in court. Coleman has an undisclosed medical condition.

In an order Thursday, Lemelle said he decided to sentence Coleman in open court because she is able to leave home for medical appointments and procedures.

Coleman and her mother, former New Orleans tax assessor Betty Jefferson, pleaded guilty in 2010 to conspiracy charges. Both testified against a former state lawmaker convicted of plotting to loot more than $1 million from taxpayer-funded charities.
