DES MOINES, Iowa — Police say an 18-year-old man has been shot near a Des Moines middle school.

Police Sgt. Jason Halifax says police were called to the area near Callanan Middle School early Sunday. He says Ariante Williams was shot once in his side. Williams told police he didn't know who shot him.

Halifax says the injury didn't appear to be life-threatening. Williams' condition is unknown.

Police say they aren't sure if Williams was on school property when he was shot.
