MIDLOTHIAN, Virginia — Two former pet store workers face animal neglect charges stemming from the death of a dog.

The Chesterfield County Police Department says Animal Services officers obtained summonses this week for 31-year-old Suzanne Jensen of Chesterfield County and 28-year-old Rebecca L. Witherspoon of Amelia. The charge is a misdemeanor.

Police said Friday in a news release that a 2-year-old golden retriever was found dead in a drying cage at a Petco store in Midlothian on May 31. The owner had dropped off the dog at the store for grooming.

Petco had said in a June statement to media outlets that the workers involved in the dog's death were no longer with the company.

Petco said its investigation found that its animal care protocols weren't followed.
