Police: 68-year-old man with physical disabilities dies in fire at his western New York home

OAKS CORNERS, New York — Authorities say a 68-year-old man with physical disabilities has died in a fire at his western New York home.

The Ontario County Sheriff's Office tells local media that Thomas Pardington's wife returned from an errand around 8:15 p.m. Thursday and noticed smoke coming from her home in the rural hamlet of Oaks Corners, 35 miles southeast of Rochester.

Deputies say Evelyn Pardington was able to get her mother safely out of the house, but heavy heat and smoke prevented her from going inside to find her husband.

Police say Thomas Pardington's disabilities apparently hampered his ability to get out of the burning home. Firefighters found him dead just inside the front door.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, but officials say it doesn't appear to be suspicious.
