SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The U.S. Coast Guard says it has seized more than 1,700 pounds (770 kilograms) of marijuana and detained a Russian man aboard a boat south of the Dominican Republic.

Officials said in a statement Friday that the drugs are worth an estimated $1.6 million.

The Coast Guard said it discovered the drugs after detecting a suspicious 40-foot boat while on a routine patrol last Saturday. The boat was registered in Finland.

No further details were available. A Coast Guard spokesman did not respond to a message asking for comment.
