Body of unidentified man found floating in Mississippi River, may be missing swimmer

NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans police say the body of an unidentified man has been found floating in the Mississippi River.

Police spokesman Juan D. Barnes Sr. says the body was recovered by firefighters near St. Peter and Decatur streets late Wednesday night.

Barnes says the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death, and release the identity of the victim.

Authorities have been looking for a man that was seen swimming in the river Tuesday night. Witnesses told police the man went under and never resurfaced.

Clothes and a phone were found at the edge of the river.

Police believe the items belonged to 42-year-old Dave Hebron. Hebron's mother told police that he had been staying at a homeless shelter after traveling to New Orleans from Jena.
