Davis II has 17 points, 10 boards; leads UC Irvine past UC Riverside 63-54 in Big West tourney

ANAHEIM, California — Will Davis II had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 3 seed UC Irvine to a 63-54 victory over sixth-seeded UC Riverside in a Big West tournament quarterfinal on Thursday night.

UC Irvine (19-12) will face either No. 2 seed UC Santa Barbara or seventh-seeded Cal Ply in a semifinal game on Friday.

UC Riverside led 48-45 with 7:35 to play but UC Irvine answered with a 12-1 run to take a 57-49 lead with 1:58 left. The Highlanders pulled within 57-54, but the Anteaters hit 6 of 6 free throws to seal it.

Davis was 8 of 10 from the floor and Luke Nelson chipped in 14 points with four assists for the Anteaters, who outrebounded the Highlanders 44-37.

Taylor Johns scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead UC Riverside (14-17).
