BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Jameka Holmes scored 25 points and earned the Most Valuable Player honors in helping Wenonah High School win the Alabama Class 5A Girls Championship 57-46 over Sylacauga on Saturday night.
Wenonah (27-7), the top-ranked team in the state, returned to the championship game after losing in the 2013 final. Wenonah won its fifth championship in school history and the first since 2004.
Holmes scored 17 second half points and hit 10 of 12 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter in closing-out the game. Wenonah carried a 36-32 lead into the final period before going 15 of 21 from the free throw line to hold off a late rally by Sylacauga.
Aja Cumbie added 12 points and 11 rebounds for Wenonah.
Shakayla Thomas led No. 6 ranked Sylacauga (28-4) with 31 points —12 of which came in the fourth quarter— and 14 rebounds.
