BRECKENRIDGE, Colorado — A Summit County judge has sentenced a man to 10 years in prison for hitting his wife in the head with a hatchet.
Michael Newcomb pleaded guilty in December to assault causing injury with a deadly weapon. The woman needed stitches for her injuries.
According to the Summit Daily (http://tinyurl.com/q84qec2), Newcomb's wife made an emotional plea to the judge to impose the minimum sentence of five years in prison, saying her husband was drunk and she did not believe he intended to hurt her.
Prosecutors said the judge needed to send a message that domestic violence carries a heavy penalty.
