Man with knife killed in 2nd police shooting in Canon City in week was on parole for assault


CANON CITY, Colorado — Police say a man shot and killed by a Canon City officer after allegedly charging at him with a knife served time in prison in both Colorado and Nebraska.

Twenty-eight-year-old Brandon Atencio died Thursday after being shot in the chest by an officer in the second police shooting in the city of 16,000 in less than a week.

The Gazette ( ) reports that Atencio had been on parole for a 2011 assault conviction. Capt. Allen Cooper told the newspaper that he had also served time for a robbery in Nebraska.

On Saturday, an officer shot a man accused of trying to steal a gun from a pawn shop after the suspect stabbed the officer. Thirty-two-year-old Hudson Clark of Penrose is expected to recover.
