MELBOURNE, Florida — A central Florida boy is recovering after being bitten by a shark off a Melbourne-area beach.

Christian Sanhueza's mother told Florida Today (http://goo.gl/dRnfm9 ) that the boy celebrated his ninth birthday Tuesday at Holmes Regional Medical Center after undergoing two surgeries.

Melissa Sanhueza says she and her son were in chest-deep water Saturday afternoon off the Patrick Air Force Base beach when her son started yelling that a shark bit his foot.

While the shark was only estimated to be 3 feet long, it was big enough to sever an Achilles' tendon and cause ligament damage.

The boy will likely leave the hospital Friday, but he will still need additional surgeries.
